At the other extreme,

size-wise,

Simon Pfaz

(1839-1921)

relied heavily on

the U.S. Government Papers

on Indian Miniaturization

to develop his

"Ocean in a Jar."

The Smithsonian still

allows visitors

to put their ears to

the jar and be

lulled into

bite-size dreams

of the seagoing life.

                   This creation,

                used successfully

for so many years in the

           home fishing industry,

            has now found a final

             resting place at the

     Smithsonian, where each year

         hundreds of thousands of

             spectators thrill to

                     the sight of

              tiny waves crashing

                  on a tiny beach

       and infinitesimal dolphins

           leaping from the spray

                 in the so-called

                        distance.
