My loss of consciousness is precipitated by a paroxysmal discharge of neurons from a focus in the cortex of my occipital lobe. Linked to the spinal cord, this misfiring of neurons fires other neurons thoughout my brain. Axons in my spinal cord controlling muscle activity fire abnormally, causing disordered contractions of muscles, especially those in the face, hands, and feet.

The first phase of the seizure is the contraction phase-- my body becomes rigid, respiratory and jaw muscles contract, and oxygen supply in the blood is rapidly depleted so my skin turns a dusky blue color. Normal movements of swallowing are lost, perhaps there's some saliva dribbling from between my tightly clenched teeth. Disordered contraction of bladder muscles could cause incontinence.

After one or two minutes, the seizure passes into its convulsive phase, with rhythmic movement of limbs and trunk muscles.

These cease after a few minutes, color returns, breathing regulates, consciousness returns gradually.
