Commonly referred to as whipworms because of their shape, this
genus contains approximately 60 species of parasites which afflict mammals.
You will become infected by these worms if you eat vegetables or fruits that are
contaminated with their eggs. Following ingestion, the worms will hatch in your
small intestine and then migrate to your large intestine. Whipworm infections can
cause diarrhea, dysentery, and anemia. In children, heavy infections can cause
mental and physical retardation.
