Danielle wrote the memo. It describes what Patti said (substituting strong words like "humiliated" for palatable ones like "embarrassed") and how I reacted. It mentions the apology and the good impression I made on Hope and Danielle during the initial meeting.
Handing the memo to me, Danielle says that despite company regulations, she, Hope and the HR supervisor decided it was not necessary to put the memo in my file.
It will remain in Danielle's desk, to be consulted the next time something like this happens. It won't, I reassure her. "I believe you," she says. "I'm really sorry about the whole thing," I repeat.
How did it end? My new boss knows nothing about it; Patti, Danielle and Hope are happy with themselves and pleased to have taught me a lesson; I got an official HR memo which won't even go in my file; and I got a fat raise. The raise, of course, is not a result of those events.
