Stevie Bonding Episode 2 features my friend Diane Cardwell, who edited Stevie's work-in-progress for Details, an article titled "Tips For Men On How To Seduce Women". Diane is also not an obsessive Stevie fan, although she says that she enjoys a Fleetwood Mac song now and then. Diane is extremely practical. The idea of her and Stevie on the phone together is almost incomprehensible to me. But Diane liked Stevie.

"She's just present in a way that celebrities rarely are," says Diane. "What made me sit up straight was something she said when she was talking about men who don't understand her need to rehearse. She said, 'It's like you had to do this interview today, and nothing short of your mother dying was going to make you miss this conversation.' I was like, Yeah, sort of."

Thus bonded, (semi, in this case), Diane was impressed with how lucid Stevie was, in spite of her gauzy, spinning image. "The way she is in an interview is very different from her weird, mystical, half-witch persona. She's not at all like that on the phone. But at the same time, I'm sure that if suddenly I wanted to have a conversation about past lives, we would have."
