I am reminded of what a friend told me about living at the Lama Foundation in New Mexico, an eclectic spiritual center in the mountains. There were actually quite a few staffers in their 20's there, but she says most of them thought spirituality was about ecstasy, getting as high as you possibly could. Most of them were primarily interested in zikhr: a Middle Eastern sufi ecstatic dance. Apparently there was a rebellion when a bunch of staff didn't want to get up for morning meditation. My friend says it was like a bunch of third graders complaining they didn't want to go to school.
