Fyodor
Dostoevsky was
born in 1821 and died
in 1881. As his Russian
compatriot Tolstoy is known
for the breadth of his works,
Dostoevsky is known for the depth
of his psychological portraits. His
works include Notes From Underground,
Crime and Punishment, The Idiot, The
Possessed, and The Brothers Karamazov.
Dostoevsky dealt with the ideas of faith,
sin, evil, suffering, and redemption, and
his characters are painfully realistic
scrutinies of the individual's mind and
conscience. His psychological extremist
portraitures are external manifesta-
tions of internal conditions common
to us all, but carried to logical
extremes in order to demon-
strate the significance and
consequence of human
nature and motiva-
tions.
