CASE FILE: Joanna McKee
by James Rutenberg
Joanna McKee, founder of the Green Cross Patient Co-op case
in Seattle, is facing trial with a colleague on "manufacturing
of a controlled substance" charges for growing the 140 marijuana
plants worth $300,000 that were confiscated from McKee's home
last Spring.
Restricted to a wheelchair for the last 20 years since a car
accident mangled her spinal cord--leaving her in constant pain
and with limited mobility in her legs--McKee discovered pot's
painkilling qualities on her own. She was arrested and thrown in
jail overnight after delivering marijuana to a sick patient who
couldn't get out of his house.
